Madelaine's Journey With Leukaemia

Welcome to 'Madelaine's Journey with Leukaemia'.

This is a site about my Daughter, Madelaine.

Madelaine was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when she was 14 months old.

The purpose of this site has many facets. Firstly, we (Mummy and Daddy aka Lisa Howe and David Armistead) find it therapeutic to look back on her journey through her illness. We believe she will get better with every breath in our bodies and we want her to read this in her adulthood and wonder what all the fuss was about!
It is for our families and close friends in the hope that they too may have a deeper understanding of her illness and also the issues surrounding it. Also, other parents that find themselves with seriously ill children may find some comfort knowing that they are not on their own. We are are all on this journey together.

Mostly, this is for Madelaine.
One day she will read this and realise her parents have gone mad.........
And she will know how much she is loved..

Dave and I would like to also thank everyone who has supported us throughout Madelaine's illness.

Many people have asked what they can do to help us. Well, we have created a fundraising page on behalf of Madelaine and ourselves with proceeds going to the Candlelighters Trust. The Trust help children with cancer and their families. They have helped us. Unfortunately, there will always be children with cancer and there will always be a need for Candlelighters. So if you want to help, please donate and click on http://www.justgiving.com/madelaineeve

Also, Madelaine and children like her rely on the availability of blood. Madelaine has had many blood transfusions. So if you don't already, please give blood if you can.

And please continue to say your prayers.

Thank you. x

Seaside Bound

Madelaine has been mostly well for the last few weeks. Apart from a couple of weeks ago. Her stomach swelled up and was very hard. She can now communicate verbally very effectively and told us that her tummy was hurting. As we are aware of the side effects of the chemotherapy, we took her to the ward for advice. The staff were (as usual) very attentive and Madelaine had an x-ray within a very short time. As it turned out, Madelaine was constipated and they gave her medication for this. We were pretty relieved as our imagination ran wild with us...
Madelaine is now doing well. However, she is neutropenic again and the hospital have advised that we take her off her Chemotherapy for a week. Her neutrophil count was 0.22. It may be an indication that she is coming down with something. She is a little pale but happy in herself.
Candlelighters have given us a weeks holiday in a log cabin in Bridlington at South Cliff. We are due to set off in the morning. Madelaine hasn't yet had a holiday so we are really excited for her.
I will bring Maddie back on Thursday for a blood count check and then drive back to Brid.

Speaking of Candlelighters, we have recieved a donation from the Customer Services Team at Linpac Packaging in Featherstone. I was lucky to meet all the wonderful people there. We have another 150 pounds for the Candlelighters Trust. One of the girls (Gail) is married to Paul who also has Cancer. They are a family who are also facing daily challenges in their lives. Paul is doing well and has recieved funding for his treatment now. He also recieves his treatment in St James'. So when so say your prayers for Madelaine, please take a moment and pray for Paul and Gail and their family.
As I said to Gail, I know the angels are looking after us all; making sure the Paul and Madelaine's lives are full of hope, love and laughter.

xx
Lisa
